BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Armenia - a tiny Country stretching in the Caucasus - is truly considered to be the cradle of agriculture for mankind: as a matter of fact, wild wheat (eg. Triticum araraticum) was cultivated in Armenia as long as 10,000 years ago while Prunus armeniaca, the scientific name of apricots has been distinctively linked to the Country since the Age of the Roman Empire.

Today, agriculture and food producing related activities are still major contributors to the national economy accounting for at least 30% of the Gross Domestic Production.

While agricultural reforms are in progress, the vast majority of the farming communities in the country are only just about self-sufficient, but they are still unable to produce the crop output required to develop a viable commercial enterprise: at present more than one million Armenians and half of the Country’s poor people live in rural areas which have only marginally benefited of the turn-around recorded by the local economy over the last half-decade.

Eradicating rural poverty through economic growth is perceived by policy makers, international experts and industry stakeholders as an immediate and strategic goal to consistently support and to proactively invigorate Armenia’s direct and accountable development.
